COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Second Harvest is partnering with Gulfstream and Chatham Emergency Management to pack up to 5,000 disaster relief food boxes from a $75,000 grant ahead of hurricane season. Volunteers will pack meals—like canned food and peanut butter—to help families who may lose power or kitchen access when a hurricane strikes.  WSAV
  • On Wednesday, 35 volunteers from Chatham Emergency Management Agency — Gulfstream — and other groups packed 5,000 disaster relief boxes at Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia to boost local readiness for hurricanes and tornadoes. The boxes, filled with nonperishable food, were prepped with a grant and set on shelves for quick use during a disaster.  WJCL

  • The Greater Savannah Black Chamber of Commerce announced the 2025 Black Business Expo to celebrate the Black business community. The expo will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 2 at the Hyatt Regency Harborside Ballroom — it will feature over fifty vendors representing Black, minority, and women-owned businesses.  Savannah Business Journal

  • Local business leaders and government officials have pushed Vision 2033 to address transportation, housing, and stormwater challenges in Chatham County as part of efforts to support a growth that expects 335,000 residents by 2040—nearly $3 million is set aside in a startup fund with input from community and education leaders. The plan, which started in 2019, now stands with an agreement among the city, county, and economic development agency.  WSAV

HEALTH NEWS

  • A mosquito sample collected from midtown Savannah tested positive for West Nile virus on Tuesday, marking the first positive result in the county this year. Chatham County Mosquito Control is treating the area with insecticide to reduce the risk of infection.  Savannah Morning News
  • A new report warns that swimming in very hot water can lead to heat exhaustion, noting USA Swimming recommends safe temperatures between 60.8°F and 85°F while the Red Cross sets age-specific time limits for water activities. NOAA data shows coastal readings such as 84.9°F at Fort Pulaski and 82.2°F at Grays Reef — local residents are urged to check water temperature before swimming to stay safe.  Savannah Morning News

  • Pet Paradise in Pooler faced heavy backlash after pet owners reported neglect in June, with one dog injured and another dying from heat stress.
