COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Renegade Paws Rescue’s viral dog Igor appeared on the Today show Monday+he traveled to New York for his guest appearance after his story went viral last week.  WSAV
  • Bonaventure Cemetery in Savannah will welcome the remains of WWII airman 2nd Lieutenant Milton Leonard Hymes Jr. on Friday at 10 a.m.—Hymes died on June 20 during a bombing mission and his remains were recovered during underwater digs; the public is invited to join the procession led by the Patriot Guard Riders at 9:30 a.m.  WSAV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tybee Island reported a sanitary sewer overflow after four to five inches of rain fell Saturday. The overflow near 807 Jones Avenue released 10,300 gallons of sewage and stormwater into a marsh—city officials began sampling and notified regulatory agencies.  WSAV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia and South Carolina law enforcement started Operation Southern Slow Down on July 14 to target speeding after data showed nearly 30 percent of 2023 traffic deaths involved speeding+ the campaign is part of a regional effort with Alabama, Florida, and Tennessee to promote safer roads.  WTOC 11
  • Today the city and Tree Department will reinstall the Spanish American war monument (also known as Georgia Volunteer) after it was damaged in a January vehicle accident, and drivers are advised to use alternate routes on Park Avenue and Bull Street starting at 7:00 a.m.  WSAV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Chatham County Health Department will offer free mammograms on Aug. 26 for qualifying women 40 and older without health insurance at the mobile unit parked at 1395 Eisenhower Drive from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.- women must schedule a phone appointment by calling the Breast and Cervical Cancer Program at 912-356-2946 or 912-307-9235.  WSAV
