ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ Six people—including four children—lost their home after an overnight fire on the 2200 block of E. Victory Drive; fire crews arrived at 1:22 a.m. and extinguished the blaze in 20 minutes as the cause remains under investigation. WJCL
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Savannah police say that 38-year-old Jernard Bacon was shot Tuesday night on the 8500 block of Waters Avenue and was taken into custody and charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon — his weapon was recovered during the incident — while his shoulder injury was not life-threatening. - ➤ On Sunday, June 22 at 4:00 p.m., the Sons of American Legion Squadron 500 awarded ($500 scholarships) to two high school seniors at the H.R. Delaney Social Hall of St. Paul CME Church. Allyson McCray of Savannah Country Day School will attend Savannah State University to study Criminal Justice while Naimah Hall from Woodville-Tompkins Technical and Career High School will study Nursing at Savannah Technical College. - ➤ At the Scholarship Luncheon on June 7 at Carey Hilliard, the National Association of University Women awarded $1000 scholarships to student scholars including Quentin Brooks, Taliyah Lewis, Skylar Scott, and Cynthia Timmons—each recognized for strong academics and extracurricular achievements with plans to attend Savannah State, Kennesaw State, Spelman, and Fort Valley State respectively. - ➤ The D. Ray James Correctional Facility in Charlton County will be expanded to nearly 3,000 beds under a $47 million contract, and it is expected to create about 400 jobs in the area. Folkston will receive $600,000 annually from water and sewer services — Congressman Buddy Carter said the expansion will bolster regional economic growth. Savannah Morning News
- ➤ The Housing Authority of Savannah is accepting applications for its Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher Program waiting list to help low-income families find affordable rentals. The wait list is open online from July 7 at 8:30 a.m. to July 11 at 4:00 p.m. — the first 1,500 qualified applicants will be chosen based on when they apply. The Savannah Tribune
