ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Savannah College of Art and Design senior, Joyce Catherine Badon of Beaumont, died in central Texas floods this weekend as President Paula Wallace announced her passing + NBC reported over 100 deaths near the Guadalupe River with ongoing search efforts.  WSAV

CRIME NEWS

  • Today, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson held a press conference to address the mall shooting—three suspects are behind bars and charged with felony murder while one woman died from a heart attack in its aftermath.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah residents can beat the heat by exploring indoor spots—options include marine science programs at the Tybee Island Marine Science Center, art and history exhibits at local museums, and creative craft and hat-making workshops to escape the summer surge.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah’s historic Davenport House is undergoing its first major restoration in over 30 years and remains open for visitors. The $800,000 project—set for completion by December—includes cleaning brickwork, repainting shutters, repairing windows, and rebuilding the porch to preserve the landmark.  WSAV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Transportation extended the Chatham Parkway bridge closure on I-16 from 20 to 29 days due to soil settlement issues, and it is expected to reopen on or before July 19. Detours are set for eastbound and westbound traffic—local officials support the extension to ensure safety.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • Today, Savannah Speech and Hearing Center received a grant from The Savannah Community Foundation’s Emerging Leaders Committee Fund to support its sliding fee scale — and scholarship programs that help local families access necessary services.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Chatham County Hospital Authority has opened its 2026 grant cycle to offer $2 million to support nonprofits and for-profit groups providing preventive health care for indigent county residents. Letters of intent are due by July 25 at 5:00 p.m. EST—selected applicants will submit full proposals by Sept 12 with awards announced in November and funds disbursed throughout 2026.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
