- ➤ Family Promise of the Coastal Empire received 11 forty-foot boxes containing 2,600 pieces of new furniture donated by IMC Logistics from a container destined for destruction to support families moving into permanent housing (including those affected by storms) and will provide home management classes to recipients. The organization also asks locals to help by attending the Red Hot Chili Pepper Run (with proceeds going toward shelter and support services). WSAV
- ➤ A journalist new to Savannah built bonds with local teens on Forsyth Park basketball courts—earning the nickname 'Mark Cuban' during their spirited games. He later left for a new job in Florida and now cherishes the community spirit he found on the courts. The Current
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Olislene 'Tina' Smith — the first fatality linked to the July 2 mall shooting — died from heart complications worsened by the incident, and investigators are working with the district attorney’s office while the investigation remains ongoing. Savannah Morning News
- ➤ Savannah Police responded Friday evening to a shooting on the 1300 block of Bradley Boulevard and transported an adult male victim with multiple gunshot wounds to Memorial Health University Medical Center — his injury severity remains unknown. Savannah Morning News
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Tybee Police say an emergency lane is open along Highway 80 and Butler Avenue on Tybee Island today for emergency vehicles during the July 4 weekend. They said the cones marking the lane will be picked up on Sunday—once the holiday traffic calms down. WTOC 11
- ➤ GDOT said that U.S. Highway 80 between Main Street and Allen Boulevard will be closed from July 8 to 11 for railroad crossing improvements as requested by Norfolk Southern Railroad. Traffic cannot cross the tracks so West Bay Street will be closed at the crossing—drivers must follow signed detour routes. WTOC 11
