  • At the NNPA conference, two Savannah State University journalism students got PGA Tour scholarships and Shirley James of the Savannah Tribune was named publisher of the year—nearly 300 Black press professionals attended the event, which wraps up today.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Savannah Tribune celebrated its 150th anniversary last Saturday in Plant Riverside District with a sneaker ball, brunch, and a drive for gently used shoes for homeless facilities. Publisher Shirley Barber James said honoree Dawn Baker—the paper’s first intern during her college days—set the pace for future interns in Savannah’s black press history.  WTOC 11
  • Moon River Opera presented an improv opera that mixed music and games for an interactive performance—this creative twist on traditional opera was shared in updates on June 27th. The performance highlighted the company’s innovative approach to live art.  WTOC 11

  • Savannah City Council approved a new GPS strategic plan on June 26 that was built from extensive community feedback — it aims to improve public safety, economic access, and community development while replacing the 2017 plan.
