COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday morning, the city of Savannah held its second annual Walk to the River at Wells Park where hundreds of residents, including Mayor Van Johnson, City Manager Jay Melder, and former Mayor Edna Johnson, walked a mile to Plant Riverside to celebrate Juneteenth. Some participants said that even though they are free, more work is needed to fully exercise their freedom—said community leader Elaine Shayvers Campbell.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • Savannah Police are investigating a shooting on Montgomery and Henry St.—no further details have been released as the investigation continues.  WTOC 11
  • On Thursday night, a shooting took place on the 2000 block of Gable St—Savannah Police are investigating the incident and ask anyone with information to come forward.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Today, acclaimed abstract expressionist Penelope Moore will create five live cocktail-inspired paintings at Hop Atomica to benefit Loop it Up Savannah—she will paint as guests sip cocktails. The event will show how each drink turns into color and emotion—blending taste and art into a multisensory celebration.  Savannah Business Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Savannah Riverkeeper has installed seven litter booms along canals—one more is planned near Enmarket Arena—to capture trash from runoff that travels to the river and ocean. Volunteers will clean and catalog the debris monthly, and the project uses a NOAA grant to help reduce single-use plastics by identifying top contributing brands.  GPB News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents in unincorporated areas of Chatham County may soon face nearly a 50% increase in property tax bills as a new county-run fire department replaces the previous fire fee—its $21 million budget is set to generate $14 million in revenue from the tax. Officials said the change could add about $300 a year to a $275,000 home’s taxes—final approval will come next Friday at the county commission meeting.  WJCL
  • The Savannah Housing Authority will soon open an online waiting list for affordable housing. The program will select the first 1,500 applicants to receive Section 8 rental assistance — the waiting list opens at 8:30 a.m. on July 7 and closes at 4 p.m. on July 11.  WSAV
  • Starting tonight at 9 p.m., the Chatham Parkway bridge will shut down until mid-July pending weather conditions as contractors raise the bridge to rebuild four traffic lanes beneath. Interstate travel under the bridge will stop from 9 p.m. to 9 a.m. from Friday through Tuesday, June 24 — drivers should follow detour signs closely.  WTOC 11
