- ➤ Family Promise of the Coastal Empire has opened four new transitional housing units in the Chatham community to help families in need. The organization also received a major donation of eleven shipping containers of furniture from Wan Hai Lines Ltd.—the gift will support families moving into permanent housing and launch the new Bridges to Stability program. - ➤ United Way of the Coastal Empire announced Tuesday evening that it raised $9 million during its campaign, with nearly $5 million to help local nonprofits offer childcare, housing and other key services and almost $3 million set aside for disaster relief and grants. Corporate donors such as Gulfstream Aerospace, Colonial Group and Georgia Ports Authority each contributed over $500,000, and a Rapid Response Disaster Fund served 3,700 hot meals after last fall's storms (details were shared at the celebration). - ➤ Veteran conductor Sinisa Ćirić—who served as the Savannah Philharmonic’s Director of Artistic Operations and Concertmaster Emeritus—has been named the new executive director of the Savannah Music Festival, succeeding former leaders Gene Dobbs Bradford and Larissa Thut Davidson. - ➤ Today, Mayor Van Johnson will lead the Juneteenth Walk—starting at 8:30 a.m. at Wells Park and ending at MLK Park along the Savannah River. The walk is open to everyone and will offer transportation for those with mobility issues to join in honoring freedom and our history. WTOC 11
- ➤ A new historical marker was unveiled outside the Ralph Mark Gilbert Civil Rights Museum on June 18 to honor Dr. Ralph Mark Gilbert—widely known as the father of Savannah's civil rights movement—who rebuilt the NAACP and organized voter registration drives that paved the way for the city's first Black police officers and mayor.
