- ➤ Mayor Van R. Johnson II will lead Savannah's second annual Juneteenth Walk to the River on June 19 to celebrate freedom and honor Juneteenth National Independence Day. - ➤ Savannah City Council will approve a revised agreement with the Friends of Forsyth Conservancy that gives the city final veto power over park projects—ensuring local control over enhancements at Forsyth Park. The memorandum of understanding establishes a 10-year partnership to fund improvements while addressing community concerns raised about previous provisions. GPB News
- ➤ Savannah City Council unanimously approved an urban camping ordinance that makes sleeping and leaving personal items in public spaces unlawful. The ordinance requires officers to issue a verbal or written warning before legal actions and will be re-evaluated on September 25 along with a 90-day review by the city manager—designed to check its effectiveness. - ➤ On Thursday, Coastal Georgia for Democracy hosted a forum in Savannah where candidates for the Georgia Public Service Commission answered questions about rising utility bills amid rate hikes that began in 2023. - ➤ The Chatham County Board of Commissioners tentatively adopted a new millage rate on June 12 that raised property taxes by 3.36 percent for General Maintenance and Operations, 48.99 percent for Special Service District taxes, and 3.43 percent for Chatham Area Transit Authority taxes.
