COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Over 140 golfers teed off at Savannah Country Club on Monday morning to support the Frank Callen Boys & Girls Club Golf Outing, an event that benefits youth programs established in 1917. Community leaders and local broadcasters joined the cause to raise funds for after-school tutoring, STEAM initiatives & sports programs that empower local youth.  WJCL
  • On Tuesday night, more than 800 community members gathered at the Savannah Convention Center for Union Mission's 10th annual Raising Hope Fundraiser (a nonprofit event) to raise money for emergency housing. The fundraiser earned a record-breaking $289,000 ahead of the city council vote on a proposed amendment that would ban sleeping and storing personal items in public spaces.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • At Savannah's Juneteenth Fine Arts Festival's Dreams Fulfilled Scholarship Gala on June 10th, the Lady of Elegance Mentorship Award was presented to Anjuli King— a longtime supporter and Visit Savannah Director of Domestic Group Tour and Entertainment— for her leadership in promoting the region. She has served as a role model for young African American women— inspiring education and mentorship— through her ongoing contributions to the community.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The new Savannah Culinary Institute opened a restaurant and café for public dining, letting locals enjoy meals while watching culinary students train. The institute will add classes and community events soon — more details are expected.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Savannah’s city council will approve a revised agreement with Friends of Forsyth Conservancy on Thursday that gives the city final say over park projects, removes free event provisions, and requires annual donor lists — the updated memorandum also creates a balanced board with local neighborhood and parks department representatives.  The Current
  • Mayor Van Johnson announced plans to revise police use-of-force reviews by adding a civilian faith leader and a City Council–chosen member after a video of Verene Ross’s arrest on May 20 raised public concern about excessive force. He said Chief Lenny Gunther will hold a press availability Friday, June 13th at 11 a.m.—where reporters will ask about the suspended sergeants and further disciplinary actions.  WJCL
  • The Georgia Supreme Court ruled that most of the new rules passed by the State Election Board before the 2024 election were not valid because the board took too much power - only the rule that requires video surveillance on absentee drop boxes remained while two rules were sent back for legal review.  WTOC 11
  • GDOT has updated the schedule for a planned 20-day closure of the Chatham Parkway Bridge over I-16—set to start at 9 p.m. Friday, June 20, weather permitting. Motorists will face detours with limited ramp access and nighttime lane closures as work raises the bridge, and they are advised to follow posted signs and check 511 for real-time traffic updates.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
