COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, a glitch from government tariffs led to 11 containers of brand-new furniture being donated to Old Savannah City Mission and scheduled for delivery at its Bargain Center (1116 Mills B Lane) over the next several days for purchase. The donation will help the charity support people facing homelessness in Savannah.  Savannah Business Journal

CRIME NEWS

  • Chatham County Sheriff—working with the Savannah Mayor—captured a suspected scammer in an undercover operation in Savannah.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah police are asking the public to help identify an armed robber caught on video near Bradley Liquor on Bradley Boulevard off Ogeechee Road—he is described as in his late 20s or early 30s, about 5 feet 7 inches tall and wearing a dark blue hoodie, black pants, bright white sneakers, a black mask and a red circular fanny pack—, and he was seen fleeing toward an apartment complex.  WJCL
  • Rincon native Miranda Briggs pleaded guilty to wire fraud for falsely claiming military benefits as a military widow of Army Ranger Garrett Briggs—she will serve two months in prison, face three years of supervised release, and repay $129,360.98 in restitution.  WJCL

  • Savannah Jazz is hosting a remembrance for jazz legend Ben Tucker on the 12th anniversary of his death with a showing of In Tune: The Ben Tucker Story on Sunday, June 8th at 2:00 PM at the Savannah History Museum located at 303 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd (self-guided tours start at 1 PM).  The Savannah Tribune
  • On Saturday, May 31st, The Chad Cooper Company on Broadway presented Justice on Trial Reloaded Off Broadway Touring Play at Georgia Southern University's Armstrong Campus, engaging the audience with strong storytelling, funny moments and powerful singing. The production featured historical figures from different times plus a ceremony awarding the W.E.B. Du Bois Humanitarian Award to local community leaders.  The Savannah Tribune

  • Savannah State University named Dr. Cora Bragg Thompson as Dean and Dr. Keshia Cunningham Aites as Associate Dean of the College of Education, following the University System of Georgia Board of Regents’ September approval to expand the college—supporting the campus’ mission to grow its educator pipeline.  The Savannah Tribune
  • A public hearing is held today at 5:30 p.m. at Whitney Administrative Complex to review a plan to close Shuman Elementary after over 60 years due to low enrollment and aging facilities—if approved, students will move to Formey Elementary and Andrea B.
