  • Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia launches its free meal program today, serving breakfast and lunch for kids 18 and under Monday-Friday at local sites until July 25—no sign-up is required. Meals are available at several locations across the area.  WJCL

  • Erica Davis Catering opened its new facility on May 28 at 2215 Rowland Ave as part of a busy week of local business milestones. Upcoming events include Georgetown Drug Company’s five-year anniversary on June 4 at 1080 King George Blvd, grand openings by Howard Family Dental in Pooler on June 5, Savannah Sunset Market on June 5, Mane Focus Hair Salon on June 6, Symphona Technology on June 10, Freedom Boat Club in Thunderbolt on June 12, as well as openings by Jim ‘N Nick’s Community Bar-B-Q and POET Terminal on June 18, Cornerstone Caregiving on June 25, and Mango Mix on July 1—each set to offer new services and celebrations to our community.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Historic Savannah Foundation announced its inaugural Endangered Places list that highlights six at-risk properties in Chatham County including LePageville Memorial Cemetery and Nicholsonboro Baptist Church. The nonprofit started the program in January to encourage community nominations and connect owners with preservation resources—efforts aimed at protecting local heritage as new development increases.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • South Carolina and Georgia transportation agencies approved an $825 million project to widen I-95 from the Savannah River to U.S. 278 — the plan includes building a new bridge to ease traffic delays. A groundbreaking ceremony will be held later this summer and construction will be completed in 2030.  WTOC 11
  • The Chatham County Fire Department announced its first Women’s Summer Fire Camp to train high school students in firefighting and emergency response. Registration is open for young women in Grades 10, 11, and 12 for the three-day camp scheduled for July 18—20 at Fire Station 3, 2009 Grove Point Rd in Savannah.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Chatham County approved a $78.8 million contract on May 23 to Reeves Young to build an emergency operations center near Savannah-Hilton International Airport. Some officials raised concerns over the nonlocal firm's higher bid—county leaders defended the decision as being based on best value.  The Current
  • Following a WTOC investigation into rising power rates and profits, Georgia Power and the Public Service Commission agreed to freeze base rates for at least the next three years — a move meant to keep power affordable. Despite the freeze, Georgia Power will file a charge on customer bills in 2026 — a step to recover $1.1 billion in damages from Hurricane Helene.  WTOC 11

  • Some sunscreens contain chemicals that can harm dogs by causing vomiting, diarrhea, and even seizures if ingested or absorbed in large amounts. Savannah pet owners should avoid products with oxybenzone or octinoxate—choosing formulas tested to be safer for pets.  WJCL
