COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Star Castle Entertainment, a beloved roller rink and laser tag center in Savannah, will close its doors this summer after nearly 40 years as its owners retire. General manager John Povanda, who has worked there for 16 years, said the building may be sold (hoping it remains a skating rink) and noted that many local fans are saddened by the announcement.  WJCL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Tray Chaney's son Malachi (a Savannah State student) was thrown 300 feet during a tornado near Atlanta and is now in the ICU with broken ribs and facial fractures while the storm damaged 13 homes, including 2 that were destroyed.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • After a downtown shootout injured four people last weekend, Savannah Police announced a summer crime prevention plan that uses extra patrols and a mobile command post parked at Ellis Square — investigators are close to identifying a suspect in a black hoodie who fired his gun and was shot in the neck.  WJCL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Georgia Economic Empowerment Summit took place at Savannah Technical College where Rep. Carol Gillard hosted a free event to provide information on local job opportunities and economic growth—panelists from film, music, and health as well as military veteran support shared key insights.  WSAV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Today marks the first day of the Atlantic hurricane season and many downtown Savannah residents are preparing for potential flooding after a harsh 2024 season. Residents note that overdevelopment has strained the drainage system while city officials and locals install flood walls to guard against rising water.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Saturday morning, Port Wentworth officials and residents met to review downtown development plans that focused on reducing truck traffic and keeping the area's local look.
