ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews have shut down a portion of I-16 near mile marker 101 after a severe multi-vehicle crash, with all westbound traffic being rerouted down Excelsior Church Road to Highway 46 then to Highway 57—officials urge drivers to use caution and allow emergency crews space to work.  WJCL
  • Savannah firefighters rescued two people who fell into the Savannah River near Plant Riverside early Friday at 3:26 a.m.—both were found clinging to a pillar and checked by EMS after a strong tide left them in distress.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Grammy and Academy Award-winning musician Jon Batiste delivered the commencement address at SCAD on Friday, urging graduates to embrace life’s unexpected challenges—he was awarded an honorary doctorate by SCAD president Paula Wallace. He is scheduled to address SCAD graduates in Atlanta today, where Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens will also receive an honorary doctorate.  GPB News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia DOT is planning to widen I-16 from I-95 to State Route 67 over 32.5 miles — a project that includes replacing or widening 20 bridges to improve traffic flow. The agency will host meetings on June 11 in Statesboro and June 12 in Bloomingdale and will accept comments until June 26.  WJCL

HEALTH NEWS

  • On Friday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Chatham County Health Department held a hurricane preparedness event on Eisenhower Drive with groups such as CEMA, Healthy Savannah, GROW Initiative GA, the American Red Cross — and Safe Kids Savannah. Dr. Sierra Peebles stressed that residents and newcomers should sign up on the Coastal Health District’s Hurricane Registry to get the help they need during emergencies.  WTOC 11
