COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The City of Savannah will honor late basketball legend Larry “Gator” Rivers with a court naming at Crawford Square (Houston Street between Perry and Hull Streets) on Friday, May 29 from 10:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Officials and Jean Rivers will speak to celebrate his lasting legacy.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Union Mission will host its 11th Annual Raising Hope on June 4 at the Savannah Convention Center, featuring a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m., dinner at 7:00 p.m. with the SCAD Bee Sharps, and a keynote by Janie Deegan—presented by Oliver Maner LLP and the Georgia Ports Authority.  The Savannah Tribune
  • The 10th Annual Coaches for Curing Cancer 5K/10K will be held Saturday, June 6 at Howe 2 Run (11 Gateway Blvd South) in Savannah starting at 7:30 a.m. Registration ranges from $25 to $35, with packet pickup Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the event supports cancer research.  WJCL
  • The Savannah Chapter of Charms, Inc. held its Annual Unity Walk on Saturday, May 16 at Lake Mayer — inviting the community to support youth transitioning from foster care to independent living.  The Savannah Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Tourism spending in 2025 generated about $4.1 billion in revenue and supported 40,780 jobs in Savannah+boosting $506 million in local taxes, a study showing that tourism remains crucial for community services amid rising competition.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah State University on Tuesday announced a $42.8M state investment to transform campus facilities—including a new gymnasium, Tiger Arena upgrades and a marsh walk at the King Frazier Student Center. Groundbreaking ceremonies for several projects are expected to begin in the coming months.  WTOC 11
  • Chatham County eighth graders can apply for Savannah Scholars’ free college access and leadership program until July 15. The program offers mentorship and college readiness support to help high-achieving, low-income students prepare for a successful transition to college.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah’s Summer 500 program launched this week with students completing soft skills training before starting six weeks of paid employment on June 1. The program is offered by the City + Chatham County + local schools + the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce to ready students for work.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
  • M.A.R.T.H.A., Inc. and AKA’s Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter will present the 2025–2026 Precious Gems Cotillion on Saturday, June 13 at 6:00 p.m. at the Yamacraw Performing Arts Center. The event celebrates middle school girls in the Precious Gems Mentoring Program — a platform for leadership, character and cultural growth.  The Savannah Tribune

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Recent rain is slowing wildfire activity as crews monitor the Highway 82 Fire, 90% contained, and the Pineland Road Fire, 95% contained. Officials advise caution with outdoor burning amid dry vegetation & wind that may spark flare-ups in wooded areas.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local horse-drawn carriage tour operators obtained a temporary restraining order stopping enforcement of the heat ordinance that bans tours when temperatures hit 85°F or when the heat index reaches 100°F in Savannah. The order remains until a June 5 hearing and prevents losses of about $3,500 + $6,500 per day as Memorial Day weekend approaches.  WJCL

  • Soar Studios launches a bungee fitness class that gives participants a unique, low-impact workout. The class opens today downtown for locals looking to add an innovative way to stay active + enjoy health benefits.  WTOC 11

  • Sprouts Farmers Market is set to open at Crossroads Shopping Center in 2027 as part of Ardent’s plan to revitalize the 92,000 sqft retail center (located on East Victory Drive and Truman Parkway). Demolition for exterior renovations will begin this summer.  The Savannah Tribune
