COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tybee Island lifeguards rescued swimmers during Memorial Day weekend as red flags and strong rip currents made the water hazardous. A new Safe Beach Day website now shows real-time safety details, and the department is hiring more staff to improve response efforts.  WTOC 11
  • On Tybee Island, longtime resident Teresa Whitten urges neighbors to prepare their homes after past hurricanes by repairing roofs, trimming dead branches and sealing leaks as hurricane season nears.  WTOC 11
  • AT&T donated $25,000 and sent volunteers to help Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia pack over 200 food kits for families affected by wildfires in Brantley and Wayne Counties today. The company also supported first responders with FirstNet to aid ongoing relief efforts.  WTOC 11
  • Georgia Ports Authority and its employees pledged a record $661K to United Way of the Coastal Empire to help fund 80 programs for housing, food and healthcare across the region. This donation continues a long-lived tradition of community support — strengthening services for local families.  WTOC 11
  • The Increase The Peace Tour launched Tuesday at John S. Delaware Center to bring music, games, mentorship and violence prevention messages to local neighborhoods. It runs until June 1 at Windsor Forest Regional, W.W. Law, Moses Jackson Advancement and Tompkins Regional Centers and features a Saturday Morning Academy for kids.  WJCL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Georgia drivers enjoy lower pump prices after Gov. Kemp suspended the state gas tax until June 3 (prices drop about 33 cents per gallon). AAA warns drivers against letting fuel run too low to avoid costly repairs.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Some local school districts still allow corporal punishment under state policy (which requires a witness and lets parents request a written explanation), and parents can opt out by submitting medical documentation.  Savannah Morning News
  • Students celebrated their school proms in March and April at locations including the Alee Temple, American Legion Ballroom, Red Gate Farms, and Savannah Country Club. Their festivities reflected bold styles and bright smiles as the school year ended.  Savannah Morning News
