  • Nick Pappas, the longtime owner of downtown Greek restaurant Olympia Cafe, passed away Saturday as noted on the cafe’s Facebook page (remembered for his passion and humor) and leaves behind a fixture on River Street for over 30 years (featured in the film Devotion).  WTOC 11
  • Tybee Island lifeguards are urging boaters to stay sober and keep a 1,000-foot distance from shore ahead of Memorial Day — the city warns that violations can result in fines up to $1,000.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Tybee Island Police warn drivers to slow down on Highway 80 ahead of Memorial Day—protecting Diamondback Terrapins as they nest and cross the road while urging motorists to keep a safe distance.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • AAA predicts that more than 1.3 million Georgians will travel by car for Memorial Day. The state public safety officials advise drivers to follow speed limits, wear seatbelts, leave extra space for big trucks, and check that their cars are ready for the trip.  WTOC 11
  • At its monthly meeting on Sunday, the Savannah NAACP chapter heard Chatham County Commission Chairman Chester Ellis discuss the state of our country and urgent community needs. He said that since the county now manages the fire department, a fee must turn into a tax and road projects need extra funding + local leaders plan further steps to address these issues.  WTOC 11
