  • City leaders kicked off 100 Days of Summer yesterday at Daffin Park as students began summer break; kids, parents, and officials enjoyed music, food, and a refreshing dip in the pool while lifeguards provided safety tips.  WTOC 11
  • The Georgia Ports Authority launched the Gainesville Inland Port on May 4 to offer daily rail service between the Port of Savannah and an inland hub near Atlanta, and the Downtown Neighborhood Association awarded (through its annual picnic) $72,500 in grants to 17 nonprofits serving community needs.  Savannah Morning News
  • Local officials shared boating safety tips for Memorial Day, advising boaters to wear lifejackets + check equipment on Savannah waterways and follow posted speed limits for a safe holiday outing.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Visitors gathered at the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force on Friday, May 22 to view 26,000 48-star flags honoring Eighth Air Force airmen lost in WWII.   • Lady’s Island Middle School broke ground on a new facility – the project will modernize classrooms and public areas to boost educational opportunities for students.  WTOC 11

  • NOAA predicts a below-average hurricane season after June 1 due to a high chance of El Niño causing increased wind shear across the Atlantic.
