  • Savannah restaurants celebrate Vidalia onion season with special dishes during Champagne of Onions Restaurant Week, which runs for three days—showcasing local chefs’ creativity and support for ending hunger.   • Blue Heron Farm was founded by Bo Ballance in a repurposed Clydesdale stable behind the Savannah-Chatham County Public School Complex in Garden City, where the farm grows mushrooms like oyster, reishi, cordyceps, chanterelles, and hedgehogs and produces fruits and vegetables. Funding cuts from the Inflation Reduction Act have strained operations — Ballance said he is urging locals to support small farms at markets — as the team builds partnerships with Savannah restaurants.  Savannah Morning News

  • Today, Savannah’s Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum hosts 'Night at the Museum' to mark National Maritime Day with the relaunch of the Sea of Ink: Savannah Maritime Tattoos exhibit and a guided tour where glowing ship models light the way. The event runs from 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m., tickets cost $22, and Schooner-level members and above may attend for free (no RSVP needed).  WJCL

  • Bert Brantley of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce said housing is vital for our economy because workers need nearby homes for living and schooling.   • Superintendent Denise Watts said Savannah public schools will use an outside group to review campus police and human resources practices after a sergeant’s lawsuit alleged retaliation for reporting sexual abuse from years ago—no firm has been chosen yet, and the review will check both past and recent actions to strengthen district operations.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NOAA forecasts a 60% chance of above-normal hurricane activity this season, predicting 13 to 19 named storms, 6 to 10 hurricanes, and 3 to 5 major hurricanes (winds of at least 111 mph) between June 1 and Nov. 30. Officials advise residents to prepare and review emergency plans to stay safe during the season.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Airport officials at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport warn travelers to expect long lines and heavy traffic this Memorial Day weekend as millions plan to fly and drive. They recommend leaving early — following TSA guidelines for quick screening — and using new parking lots to ease congestion.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah’s city council approved an $8 million contract to remediate toxic soil and build a new parking lot at Enmarket Arena—members said work will start in June and finish by December after a 6-3 vote following weeks of debate. This decision meets legal obligations outlined in the city’s lease and environmental agreements with state and federal agencies.  WTOC 11
  • City council approved a contract with Landmark Preservation to restore the Forsyth Park fountain at a cost not to exceed $650,000, and the work will disassemble, recast + repair the fountain before reassembling it by August 31st. No weddings or special events are scheduled to use the fountain as a backdrop during the restoration.  WTOC 11
