COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia hosted its Legacy of Leadership event today at the Savannah Convention Center, honoring Sherry Feathers and featuring keynote speech from Donna Orender + proceeds support Girl Scouts efforts.  WTOC 11
  • Senior Citizens Inc. held its Legends, Leaders & Life Well Lived Awards Luncheon today at The Palmetto Club at The Landings, honoring Pat Hackney, Shirley Barber James, and Dr. Paul Pressly for their service and leadership that shaped Savannah.  The Savannah Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Two eateries closed last week when Olympia Cafe did not renew its lease due to ownership issues & Silk Route closed less than a year after opening. Meanwhile, new spots including Dalkom Cafe, Savannah Scone Company, Bagel Dock Express and Moo Bong Ri are adding dining options in the area.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Portman’s Music Superstore, Georgia’s oldest continuously operated music retailer founded on Broughton Street in 1936, is celebrating 90 years today and continues to support local musicians through instrument sales, lessons, and sound system installations for schools and churches — expanding its legacy while serving multiple regional locations.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah’s restored Forsyth Park Fountain earned the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s Chairman’s Award while the Park & Tree Commission received a Stewardship Award from the Historic Savannah Foundation. Completed in December 2025, the project preserves a cherished local landmark and strengthens efforts to care for historic assets.  The Savannah Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah State University awarded degrees to over 390 graduates during its 208th commencement ceremony on May 8 at the Enmarket Arena. SSU leaders honored top academic performers (including Mr. Jinorri Jovel Wilson with the Second Mile Award) as they celebrated the spring Class of 2026.  The Savannah Tribune
  • The Savannah Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa International honored teachers during Teacher Appreciation Week by hosting a breakfast and Adopt-a-Teacher initiative at J.W. Hubert Middle School on May 6. Principal Timothy Cox and Gloria B. Lloyd led the event to celebrate education and community ties (paying tribute to school history).  The Savannah Tribune
  • Savannah State University junior Zyriah Garden won the prestigious Gilman Scholarship that gives her $2,500 for a service mission in Nakpanduri, Ghana, focusing on youth empowerment. Garden and her peers will distribute 350 sewing machines + provide sustainable skills to local young women until June 5.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Roger Moss won re-election as Chatham County School Board president for a second four-year term after earning 51.7% of 52,614 votes on Tuesday+ his literacy-focused campaign backed plans to support a new superintendent aimed at modest score gains.  The Current
  • SCAD celebrated its largest-ever graduating class during SCAD Fashion 2026 with a runway show Friday night at the SCAD Museum of Art — 60 designers presented 200 looks from both campuses, and commencement with speaker Stella McCartney is set for May 29.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, May 15, at a marina on Hutchinson Island, at least a dozen manatees were stranded when a low tide blocked their exit while feeding on marsh plants (they cooled off in mud until the tide rose about seven hours later).  GPB News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia Ports Authority submitted a letter to fund a study to deepen and widen the Savannah River. Working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the study will take two years while dredging work will follow over 8 to 10 years to boost port capacity.  WTOC 11
