COMMUNITY NEWS

  • During Military Appreciation Month, Navy Federal Credit Union launched its Heart for Heroes donation drive to support service members and families by collecting nonperishable snacks, hygiene items, and morale boosters. Donation boxes are available at five branches across Coastal Georgia — including Savannah, Richmond Hill, Hinesville, Beaufort, and Parris Island — and collected items will be distributed through local nonprofits such as Operation Morale Support.  WJCL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On May 17, the Savannah Fire Department responded at 6:04 p.m. to a structure fire at a pool house on the 1000 block of Shawnee Street — heavy smoke was visible when crews arrived.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah Fire crews responded around 2:00 p.m. Saturday, May 17 to a fire in a vacant structure on the 1500 block of Augusta Ave—multiple units worked at the scene.  WTOC 11

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Starting this summer, Georgia oyster farmers will be allowed to harvest oysters year-round, but they will have only two hours per day during the warmer months—shorter than the four hours allowed in South Carolina and Florida. Charlie Phillips of the Georgia Shellfish Growers Association said the new regulation sets strict time and temperature controls to help ensure safe oyster production and supply local markets.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah/Hilton Head International is offering nonstop flights with fares under $200 on select days in June, July, and August for families planning summer vacations. The flight options include routes to cities like Akron and Canton, Boston, and New York — travelers should plan ahead to secure the best rates.  Savannah Morning News

  • A federal appeals court in Atlanta is reviewing election maps that state lawmakers redrew after a court order to better represent Black voters. Lawyers claim the changes hurt over 185,000 Black voters and may affect future court interpretation of the Voting Rights Act while a ruling is not expected soon—leaving questions about next year's elections.  The Current

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Jay Goldstein of Memorial Health warned that the hot weekend may increase cases of heat exhaustion that can quickly turn into dangerous heat stroke if people do not stay properly hydrated. He advised using a mix of water and electrolyte drinks and wearing sunscreen—while avoiding alcohol and caffeine to reduce dehydration risk.  WSAV

  • Southern Living released a list of the 10 best new hotels of 2025 based on guest experiences, reviews, and value.
