  • Federal prosecutors in Savannah announced a sweeping indictment on May 16th of a large group of alleged gang members for violent and financial crimes—details were shared by officials—while a UGA study found that visitors to artificial reefs contributed $8.2 million to the coastal economy in 2023. Lawmakers and athletic leaders met at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on May 16th to spotlight the growing popularity of girls flag football.  GPB News
  • Forsyth Farmers’ Market will hold its Family Feast fundraiser on Sunday, May 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Old Dairy Farm on Tennessee Ave to support community outreach programs & youth education, and the event will offer family-friendly food options and live entertainment for all ages.  WJCL

  • Texas-based Buc-ee’s—known for its pulled pork sandwiches and clean restrooms—will open its Brunswick, Georgia location on July 1 while the company plans an early next year store in Monroe County and additional sites in other states.  Savannah Morning News

CRIME NEWS

  • An Amber Alert was issued in Savannah after 3-year-old Leilani Elliott was taken without permission during a supervised visit on Wheaton Street at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, with suspect Jessy Elliott—32 and driving a 2022 white Nissan Altima—last seen at 825 Wheaton St and police urging anyone with information to call 911.  WJCL
  • Federal prosecutors in Savannah indicted 30 alleged Sex Money Murder gang members for racketeering, murder, drug trafficking and fraud after a four-year investigation — several defendants entered not guilty pleas in their initial court appearances.  GPB News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Starting June 20, the Chatham Parkway Bridge will close until July 10 for the final phase of a nearly year-long reconstruction, forcing 17,000 drivers to use alternate routes. Officials will also close lanes on I-16 below the bridge (9 p.m. to 9 a.m. from June 20 to June 23) and will update the schedule by June 6 if changes occur.  WTOC 11
