- ➤ WSAV News 3 partners with Clearwave Fiber to run the Schools Out Summer Food Drive to help children who miss free-reduced meals during summer. Donors can drop off packaged foods at Food Lion and Clearwave Fiber sites on June 3, June 10, June 12, June 17 - and June 19 to support local families. WSAV
CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ TEDxSavannah will feature 12 local speakers and live music on May 16 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Fine Arts Auditorium at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus — the talks will address local issues and spark discussion. Doors open at 8 a.m. and tickets cost $60 with discounts for educators, students, first responders, active-duty military and nonprofits — groups of more than six get a 10% discount by contacting the organizer. - ➤ St. Vincent’s Academy celebrates its 180th anniversary since it was founded on June 23, 1845 and has educated young women in Savannah for generations. President Mary Anne Hogan appeared on WTOC’s Welcome to our Community to review the school’s milestones and share its plans for the future - the academy’s long legacy started with a private school and orphanage and has evolved over time. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Georgia DOT is studying the feasibility of a high-speed rail line linking Savannah and Atlanta to offer faster travel and ease traffic congestion. The study runs through 2027 and, if feasible, an environmental review will begin in 2028 + planners are addressing concerns about freight delays at the Port. Savannah Morning News
- ➤ City officials said the historic Forsyth Park fountain will be removed for off-site restoration starting early summer if city council approves the plan. Staff said no events will be scheduled at the fountain—its first major restoration since 1988. WTOC 11
- ➤ Today, the Chatham County Board of Commissioners holds a town hall meeting at 6 p.m. at Montgomery Athletic Association for District 1 residents to discuss the proposed SPLOST sales tax that may fund projects such as road improvements, Tybee Beach renourishment and Civic Center redevelopment. Municipalities, including the City of Savannah, must submit their project priorities by May 23 — city manager Jay Melder urged voters to consider past successes — as officials plan for the ballot in November. - ➤ The City of Savannah’s Planning and Urban Design Department and Hudson Hill Community Organization are hosting a zoning meeting for homeowners, renters, and business owners on May 17 from 1-3 p.m. at the Hudson Hill Neighborhood Center — 2227 Hudson St. Savannah Business Journal
- ➤ Seventy-three SPD officers signed an eight‑page memorandum addressed to Chief Gunther and city officials expressing no confidence in some SPD executives—Assistant Chief DeVonn Adams, Major Shinita Young and Director of Strategic Initiatives Sonya Johnson. The complaint alleges that these executives mismanaged the department’s $67 million budget and misrepresented a staffing crisis—SPD officials have not yet commented and will review the memorandum soon. - ➤ City officials said Forsyth Fountain will have its first major restoration since 1988, with plans pending City Council approval to remove the fountain from Forsyth Park this summer for off-site work. No weddings or events will be scheduled during the restoration — more details will be shared later. WSAV
