COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The US Coast Guard Cutter Eagle is docked at downtown Savannah this weekend and will be open for visitors through Sunday. The 295-ft historic training vessel (which has served Coast Guard Academy cadets since 1946 and is on a 106-day trip along the Eastern Seaboard and Gulf) offers naval history insight.  WTOC 11

CRIME NEWS

  • Officials reported that a man stole Brisket from the Humane Society for Greater Savannah on May 5 at about 1:20 p.m. by entering a staff-only area before loading the dog into a Kia Sorento & anyone with information is urged to contact local law enforcement.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah chef Mashama Bailey has been named to the TIME100 list following her tribute published on April 15 — a nod to her work uniting the community through food, history and culture. As co-owner of The Grey, she said the honor feels surreal.  WJCL

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Georgia Department of Labor announced on May 8 record gains in labor force and employment for the three-county Savannah area in March, with the unemployment rate falling two-tenths to 2.9% over the month.  Savannah Business Journal

  • Savannah State University held its 2026 commencement ceremony yesterday at Enmarket Arena, where graduates celebrated their achievements with speeches by university officials & an uplifting display of Tiger pride.  Savannah Morning News
  • ShinyHunters claimed to hack the Canvas platform, causing student access issues in Georgia on Thursday and Friday & officials enacted new security protocols as schools worked to restore full service.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Georgia law forbids killing nonvenomous snakes (penalties include up to one year in jail and a $1,000 fine) but allows residents to remove venomous snakes from their property. Wildlife experts advise locals to leave snakes undisturbed to prevent bites.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chatham County officials honored Officers Tom Velte and Brandon Lowe for rescuing two children dropped from a balcony on the third level during the April 12 fire at Georgetown Oaks on Savannah's South Side; they were recognized at Friday's commission meeting as bodycam footage showed their swift response.  WJCL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Local health officials say that coastal residents exposed to hantavirus remain healthy and a flight attendant tested negative (35 days after the last positive case, further spread is unlikely). Officials report that only prolonged close contact poses a risk.  WTOC 11
  • Amy Pierce, RN, co-founder of Coastal Care Partners, published her new book The Aging Care Blueprint for Families on Friday, May 8. The book offers guidance on informed decision-making and prepares families for healthcare + financial planning for aging loved ones.  Savannah Business Journal
