COMMUNITY NEWS

  • CBNA invites residents within its neighborhood boundaries to join monthly community meetings held on the first Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at the Tompkins Regional Recreation Center on Ogeechee Rd - residents can bring their concerns, hear reports from public services, and meet neighbors with the meetings led by President Gloria Williams.  The Savannah Tribune

CRIME NEWS

  • The Chatham County Police Department is asking for assistance finding 12-year-old Neriah Lewis—she was last seen leaving her home on Trafford Lane while riding a purple bike on Wednesday evening.  WTOC 11
  • The GBI, Henry County Police Department, Henry County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations arrested 17 suspects — aged 17 to 59 — in an undercover operation targeting sex traffickers and commercial sex buyers from multiple states, and the investigation remains ongoing.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Savannah Chapter of the Moles (chartered on April 24, 1954) celebrates 71 years of friendship and has built a legacy that includes national leaders. The chapter will travel to New Orleans in June for the 75th Anniversary Conclave under the theme 'Celebrating A Dazzling Diamond Anniversary Conclave' after holding its 70th anniversary event on December 21, 2024.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Today, Historic Savannah Foundation announced its inaugural list of six endangered historic buildings in Chatham County—identified as being at risk from demolition, neglect, or insensitive development—and started a community nomination program to help protect these sites during its 70th anniversary and National Preservation Month.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Savannah Alumnae Chapter will host Delta Authors on Tour on May 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Savannah Technical College — 5717 White Bluff Road — with nine published Delta members.   • The Mayor’s Small Business Conference was held at the Savannah Civic Center on May 7 as part of Small Business Week, organized by local Chambers of Commerce + the Economic Development Department. The event featured workshops, panel discussions and a mayor’s address that gave local small business owners new tools to boost their success.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • May 7th, Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant was fined $30,000 by the Georgia EPA for discharging industrial wastewater to a publicly owned treatment works without a required industrial pretreatment permit—officials said the company also used a sewage holding tank for purposes beyond construction trailers.  Savannah Business Journal
  • Tybee Island officials reported that sea turtle nesting season began May 1 and urged residents and visitors to turn off lights by 9 p.m. Marine Science Center staff will mark nests with yellow tape — and ask beachgoers to fill in holes and remove sandcastles to keep turtles safe.  WTOC 11

  • Today, the Savannah City Council will consider approving a development plan on the 125.093 acre Hill Durrence Tract in Aldermanic District 5 at the intersection of Fort Argyle Road and Kaizen Parkway. The plan will combine a residential complex near the road entrance — and warehouses toward the center and rear of the tract.  Savannah Business Journal
