  • Caroline Berry has been named the new director of annual giving at St. Joseph’s/Candler Foundations. The Savannah native (with over 30 years in local nonprofits) will lead donor engagement and grow The 1804 Club membership for local healthcare support.  The Savannah Tribune

BUSINESS NEWS

  • The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the grand opening of Nautical Boat Club on Hutchinson Island this Saturday, May 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The club will offer a concierge-style boating experience with access to a fleet of premium boats for members.  Savannah Business Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • A panel of Savannah elders recounted memories of segregation at St. Philip A.M.E. Church on Sunday during a living history event. The event, sponsored by Justice United Savannah Together (JUST), celebrated local leaders who fought segregation in schools and businesses.  The Savannah Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • John Cassell was honored as WTOC Top Teacher on May 6, recognizing his outstanding work in education in the community.  WTOC 11
  • St. Joseph’s/Candler and the Medical College of Georgia have received accreditation for their first Internal Medicine residency program aimed at relieving the local doctor shortage. The inaugural class will begin July 1, 2027, with future tracks expanding to include Family Medicine and General Surgery (targeting 103 residents by 2031).  The Savannah Tribune

FINANCE NEWS

  • The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Greater Savannah Chapter launched the Economic Empowerment SisterNomic$ Book Club Series to boost financial literacy among African American women. The six-week virtual series runs on May 11, 18, 25 and June 1 at 7:00 p.m. (fee $5).  The Savannah Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Van Johnson declared this week Small Business Week at the Mayor’s Small Business Conference (where local business owners networked). Applications are open for the Launch Savannah Minority Business Accelerator, and a small business job fair is set for May 13 at the Civic Center.  WTOC 11

HEALTH NEWS

  • A nurse at St. Joseph’s Candler Hospital saved a patient on Wednesday by performing the Heimlich maneuver during her lunch break, and the lifesaving act fostered a lifelong bond. Hospitals, stores, and restaurants are honoring nurses during National Nurses Week with local events + special offers.  WTOC 11
  • The Georgia Department of Public Health is monitoring two residents who returned from the MV Hondius cruise ship linked to a hantavirus outbreak. The residents are healthy (no signs of infection) and are following CDC guidelines.  WTOC 11

  • Savor Georgia magazine published its top 10 burger joints today, spotlighting local favorite Green Truck Pub in Savannah & nine other notable establishments statewide with details on menu specialties and hours.  Savannah Morning News

  • Jenkins High School senior A'Niyah Browner won the 34th annual Hollis Stacy Award as Savannah's most versatile female athlete on May 6 — she excelled in flag football, basketball and track and will join SCAD to continue playing flag football.  Savannah Morning News
