COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Savannah’s Union Mission will unveil plans on Friday to transform a former Family Dollar building on West Oglethorpe Avenue into an 8,200 square foot resource center. The facility, designed with SCAD students, will offer a larger day center—housing, counseling, workforce training, laundry and medical services to help people get back on their feet.  WTOC 11

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local business leaders and the Chamber celebrated several grand openings and ribbon cuttings on April 29th and May 1st, welcoming Proven Fitness, Southern Marketing Team, IQ Fiber, Savannah Paranormal Museum, Bentley’s Pet Stuff and Buffalo Wild Wings as they launch new ventures in the area. Today, Arcadia Savannah holds a ribbon cutting at 11 AM at 5300 Bull St — upcoming events include 11A on May 8th, Top Gun on May 10th, Esther’s Place on May 14th, Nautical Boat Club on May 17th, Erica Davis Catering on May 28th, AC Hotel on May 29th and the Howard Family Dental Pooler South opening on June 5th.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
  • The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce and its partners launched National Small Business Week on May 5 with a press conference and Owner’s Council luncheon—today the Mayor’s Small Business Conference is underway and Shop Small Weekend will follow later this week to support local entrepreneurs. CRIME NEWS

  • Nearly four years after a mass shooting at Wessel Home Apartments on Avery Street that killed two people and injured eight—including Terryl Coleman, a father of five—his family held a candlelight vigil for his birthday and demanded justice as no arrests have been made.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • On Tuesday, school leaders at Woodville Tompkins Lower Campus hosted Savannah’s first Future Educator Celebration and Signing Day where students and families signed letters of intent to become teachers—an effort to address the state’s teaching shortage. Superintendent Dr. Denise Watts said she was proud of the future educators joining Georgia’s Teach in the Peach campaign.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Last week, Governor Kemp signed 25 new bills in Savannah, with 19 laws designed to boost coastal areas by supporting the arts and addressing homelessness. He also approved healthcare measures to expand access to IVF treatments and disability services — moves that are expected to strengthen the region’s economy and quality of life.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
