COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents can help fight hunger on Saturday, May 9 by leaving food bags at their mailboxes for letter carriers to collect — donations will support local food banks and a summer feeding program launching in June.  WTOC 11
  • Three weeks after a fire damaged 22 of 24 units at Georgetown Oaks, a nearby church is helping displaced residents by offering donated kitchenware + furniture + clothing. Residents can pick up supplies by contacting church staff or visiting on Sundays from 9 a.m. to noon.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah State University has earned dual Military Friendly School and Military Spouse Friendly School designations for 2026-2027, recognizing its commitment to veterans, active-duty service members and their families. The recognition validates its efforts to provide benefits assistance and transition resources to military-connected students.  WTOC 11
  • SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) was named one of the nation’s top 25 film schools by The Hollywood Reporter, noting its expanding facilities and new M.A. programs. It will add soundstages later this year and host its film festival Oct. 24-31.  Savannah Morning News
  • Kamsey Schwark of Richmond Hill Primary School builds confidence in kindergarteners with phonics lessons plus hands-on learning that prepares them for first grade. In her third year, she uses every moment to help children enjoy learning and value each small success.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologists forecast an early, strong El Niño that may reduce tropical storm development this summer and prolong drought conditions in Georgia. Warmer Pacific waters could bring wetter winters and fewer hurricanes, which may delay needed rains for local farmers (Drought Response issued April 27).  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Gov. Kemp said Monday that Georgia officials began issuing one-time tax refunds under HB 1000 to taxpayers who filed both state income tax returns. Refund amounts range from $250 to $500 based on filing status & further details are on the state website.  WJCL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Actress Patricia Heaton is set to keynote the SmartWomen Luncheon & Expo at the Savannah Convention Center on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 10 a.m. The fundraiser supports the Telfair Mammography Fund to provide breast health services for uninsured and underinsured women.  Savannah Morning News
