CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Effingham County law enforcement agencies are searching for murder suspect Demarion Quinton Butler, described as six feet tall—175 pounds and wearing a red hooded sweatshirt, after he evaded arrest in Rincon near W. 7th Street and Stokes Avenue; he is wanted for the April 7 shooting death of Isaiah Barbee Jr on Simpson-Town Road in Newington and residents are urged to secure their homes and vehicles and call 911 if they see him. CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ Yesterday, nearly 900 SCAD students and alumni gathered on Tybee’s south beach at the pier for the SCAD Sand Arts Festival — with 75 from the Atlanta campus — as they built creative sand sculptures in the 23rd annual event. WJCL
- ➤ The Historic Savannah Foundation today released its first Endangered Places list naming (six at-risk historic sites) in Savannah that include a Black cemetery, a firehouse, three houses and a church. The nonprofit, celebrating 70 years, plans to issue more lists later this year and hopes community nominations will help save these landmarks for future generations. GPB News

- ➤ Tybee Island Maritime Academy—a STEAM-certified K-8 charter school—has boosted local growth and drawn families while its lease is set to end in 2028, prompting community leaders and parents to support a plan to relocate the school to Memorial Park. Enrollment has reached 434 with a waitlist over 200, and local business and arts groups worry about losing the school’s impact on the island. Savannah Morning News

- ➤ County officials including Commission Chairman Chester Ellis toured Fire Station 3 and the Fire Training Center on April 29 to inspect the facilities and accompanying equipment. - ➤ Officials at Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport are working to meet staffing targets for air traffic controllers amid a nationwide shortage—currently, the airport has 21 certified positions while the goal is 29—after U.S. Secretary Sean Duffy announced plans to speed hiring with a $5,000 bonus for new academy graduates and faster processing for over 8,300 applicants.
