COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A Savannah mother is hosting the second annual May Day for Desaray Community Walk on May 6 to honor her daughter and fight gun violence. The event will feature live music, a DJ, keynote speakers and a candlelight vigil at Yamacraw Square (near First Bryan Baptist Church).  WTOC 11
  • Step Up Savannah launches its May for Mobility campaign to boost job readiness and financial stability starting with Economic Development Week from May 4 to May 8, plus fundraising events and training sessions. The nonprofit partners with Dave + Buster’s and local restaurants to create lasting opportunities in Savannah.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah hosts the 2026 Severe Weather Expo at The Home Depot on Saturday, May 2 from 8 a.m. to noon. Visitors will learn how to prepare for hurricane season with interactive exhibits, live demonstrations, and expert panels (event sponsored by WJCL and Dick Broadcasting).  WJCL
  • Nine Line Apparel is hosting Jeep Freedom Fest at its Fort Argyle Road headquarters on Saturday, May 9 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., where obstacle courses + raffles + giveaways + a vehicle showcase will raise funds for nonprofits aiding veterans + first responders.  WTOC 11

  • Fires forced three Savannah residents and a pet to leave their homes today + multiple fire departments are coordinating response and recovery while public health officials urge high risk individuals to stay indoors if air quality worsens.  WJCL

  • Visit Savannah hosted its 'Bananas' event at Yankee Stadium Sunday, April 26, where over 33 meeting planners and local partners united to showcase the city's creative charm and set the stage for future conventions.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce

  • Savannah hosted the annual Association County Commissioners of Georgia convention at the Convention Center last week, drawing 1,200 attendees — a boost for local accommodations, dining, and transportation — as Visit Savannah and community leaders held a thank you dinner at Garibaldi’s Cafe.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
  • On April 27, Georgia Environmental Protection Division declared a statewide Drought Response Level 1 for public water systems using surface water or groundwater. Outdoor watering remains allowed as officials warn that 98% of the state faces severe drought amid ongoing wildfires in southern and coastal areas.  Savannah Morning News

  • During Donate Life Month, a Savannah family led by Jeff Gregory urges residents to register as organ donors after he waited 15 months for a transplant call. LifeLink of Georgia reports about 3,400 locals await transplants for vital organs.  WJCL
