  • Mashama Bailey — an award-winning chef and co-owner of The Grey — has partnered with Senior Citizens, Inc. to create a healthy Chicken Roti dish that mixes Indian and Caribbean flavors for the Meals on Wheels program. She worked with the kitchen team to choose spices like cardamom and Spanish paprika that are good for seniors’ diets.  WSAV

CRIME NEWS

  • A 27-year-old Savannah man—Malik Javier McKenzie—was convicted in federal court for trafficking drugs and illegally modifying his Glock, and he now faces a minimum of 30 years to life in prison.  Savannah Morning News

  • Today, SCAD hosts the 44th annual Sidewalk Arts Festival in Forsyth Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. as students, alumni, and local high school students create chalk art on over 800 concrete squares—award contests, a parade featuring student athletes, and a concert by The Bee Sharps will add extra excitement to the day.  WJCL

  • Savannah State University honored two faculty members at its spring honors convocation—Dr. Antonio Velazquez for teaching excellence and Dr. Philip Omunga for service excellence—and SSU President Jermaine Whirl presented the awards.  WSAV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Savannah celebrated the 25th anniversary of Earth Day Savannah on Friday at Daffin Park with live music—hands-on activities and recycling drop-offs drawing about 1,000 people. Over 35 nonprofits and eco-vendors shared sustainable tips as the City partnered for the second year with the Lite Foot Environmental Foundation.  WSAV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Chatham County jail resumed in-person visitations on Friday after nearly 15 years without face-to-face meetings, fulfilling Sheriff Richard Coleman's campaign promise. Inmates were allowed two guests for 20-minute sessions on weekdays—unit one received visits first while repairs continue in other units.  WJCL
  • Savannah City Council approved a new affordable housing overlay district that relaxes zoning rules across roughly 440 acres near downtown to allow higher-density projects and ease the burden on cost-strained renters. The measure supports duplex and apartment developments that must charge no more than 30% of a household's income & could be expanded to other neighborhoods in the future.  GPB News
  • In 2024, the Chatham Savannah Authority for the Homeless reported 51 encampments, and the City of Savannah has now adopted new policies that require staff to post notices and speak with encampment residents before and after removal—aiming to connect them with shelters, mental health care, and job training. Officials have also partnered with outside agencies to develop a 5-year strategic plan to end homelessness.  WTOC 11
