  • The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society will hold its 16th Annual Night of Champions and Hiring Expo on May 1 at Savannah Marriott Riverfront Hotel—starting at 6 p.m. with a cocktail hour, dinner, and awards ceremony. The event will honor local businesses that hire differently-abled employees and will include agency tables to help job-seekers connect with employers.  Savannah Morning News
  • On Saturday, April 26, the Youth Rescue Project will honor Larry 'Gator' Rivers with a free basketball clinic and 3-on-3 tournament at Crawford Square Park, where he first learned to play. Rivers was a local icon who played for the Harlem Globetrotters and served on the Chatham County Commission—his legacy is celebrated with divisions for 8u, 10u and 12u players and on-site registration.  WJCL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Chatham County Fire Department responded to a three-alarm fire on Cotesworth Place and Tidewater Way (April 24th) and urged the public (via Facebook) to avoid the area so crews could work safely.  WSAV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Wawa opened its first Pooler store today at 1480 Pooler Parkway—customers lined up as early as 4 a.m. for free goodies and a contest featuring police and firefighters, with the first 100 receiving t-shirts. The store will offer free coffee through May 4 and is part of a plan to open over 26 locations in Georgia in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network hospitals.  WSAV

  • Carroll County Sheriff's Office is searching for missing 14-year-old Ca'Mya Burse, who was last seen on April 17 around 5 p.m. on Pine Hill Drive wearing a black shirt, black shorts, and white Crocs (she is 5 ft 1 in and 98 lbs) and anyone with information should call Investigator Wagner at (770-830-5916).  WJCL

  • The Savannah Philharmonic kicked off its 4th annual 'Phil The Neighborhoods' series with a free performance at Savannah Quarters on April 24 and continues today at Parkside at 6:30 p.m.—additional concerts will be held Saturday at Chippewa Square at 1 p.m. and at Cuyler/Brownsville 'Pressboy' Park at 6 p.m.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Savannah’s drought conditions are expanding amid a 13-day dry spell and a rainfall deficit of over 5.5 inches — marking one of the driest Aprils on record if April ended today. Forecasts show a low chance of rain with isolated showers and thunderstorms possible on Saturday — and the drought may worsen over the coming week.  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Savannah City Council passed a zoning amendment in a 7 to 2 vote that lets developers build larger multi-family homes with both affordable and market-rate units to address the housing shortage. The measure covers the Victorian District, Metropolitan, Thomas Square and part of Live Oak — with prices capped so that housing costs do not exceed 30% of a household's gross income, and city leaders said they will add more neighborhoods in the future.  WSAV
