COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The American Red Cross opened a newly renovated, unified, and sustainable facility at 2500 E. President Street in Savannah today. The 11,820 (sqft) center consolidates two locations to boost emergency response and volunteer access across southeast Georgia.  The Savannah Tribune

  • Savannah Small Business Week kicks off May 4 with a Business Summit — a full day for local entrepreneurs to gain insights, build connections, and prepare strategies for growth.  The Savannah Tribune

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Work has begun on an expansion at Georgia Transformer in Effingham County that will add about 400 jobs to meet rising power demands — the project is scheduled to finish by November 2027.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah State University will host a free screening of the historical documentary Dorchester Academy: A Legacy of Liberty on Thursday, Apr. 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Howard Jordan Building, 3219 College Street, celebrating the academy’s role in civil rights, education & community leadership.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Savannah State University raised over $400,000 for student scholarships during its 27th Annual Scholarship Gala Saturday at the Convention Center’s Governor’s Ballroom—celebrating Dr. Jermaine Whirl’s investiture as president while awarding five scholars and featuring a special $10,000 donation from Whirl and his wife.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Wildfires forced evacuations and destroyed homes in Brantley County, prompting officials to impose a 30-day burn ban across more than 90 southern counties. Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency as firefighters battle rapidly spreading flames under dry conditions (with multiple departments on site for mutual aid).  WJCL
  • The City of Savannah Office of Sustainability will host the 26th Annual Earth Day Festival at Daffin Park on Friday, Apr. 24 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. More than 60 vendors will offer interactive exhibits, live music, and food trucks; volunteer opportunities remain available.  The Savannah Tribune

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia imposed a 30-day burn ban covering 91 counties, effective Wednesday, Apr. 22. The action stops prescribed, yard debris, and agricultural burning amid worsening drought and rising wildfire threats in southern counties.  WJCL

HEALTH NEWS

  • Coastal Health District advised residents that wildfire smoke from Brantley and Clinch counties is creating unhealthy air quality across parts of coastal area, and vulnerable groups including children, pregnant women, and those with respiratory conditions should stay indoors, monitor local air quality reports (via county emergency services) and follow precautions.  WTOC 11

SPORTS NEWS

  • Savannah native Flau’jae Johnson was picked eighth in Monday’s WNBA Draft by the Golden State Valkyries and traded to the Seattle Storm — a team known for building competitive rosters. The former LSU standout will join Seattle’s lineup this season to build on her college success.  The Savannah Tribune
