ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Local American Red Cross volunteers helped eight people — including seven children — after a fire at Live Oak Plantation Apartments on Waters Avenue in Savannah on April 23.  Savannah Business Journal
  • A pedestrian was struck by a vehicle around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning on Ogeechee Road near I-516—he was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead while police confirmed the nearby school bus was not involved.  WJCL

  • The Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce will coordinate National Small Business Week from May 5–9 with local partners including the City, Greater Savannah Black Chamber, Hispanic Chamber, and Savannah Downtown Business Association—events will kick off with a press conference and luncheon with the Owner’s Council.  Savannah Chamber of Commerce
  • Wawa will open its first Chatham County store on April 24 at 1480 Pooler Parkway with doors opening at 8 a.m.—the event will include a ribbon cutting at 8:30 a.m. and a 'Hoagies for Heroes' competition to show community support.  Savannah Morning News

CRIME NEWS

  • The Savannah Police Department said a man was hit while crossing Mills B. Lane just after 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday and later died at Memorial Hospital (Mills B. Lane remains closed as emergency vehicles investigated the crash), leaving commuters to use alternate routes.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah is observing Holocaust Remembrance Day at the Jewish Educational Alliance today as community members take 15-minute shifts to read the names of children who perished from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.—the event will also recognize winners of a local art and writing contest and feature an archival exhibit of the SS St. Louis apology open on April 24 and 25.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah will host several outdoor events this weekend — free performances by the Savannah Philharmonic at venues in western, east, downtown, and west Savannah alongside the 44th annual Sidewalk Arts Festival at Forsyth Park featuring chalk art from local students. The Garden Club of Savannah will offer the 48th NOGS Tour of Hidden Gardens on April 25-26 while Port Wentworth will stage the 52nd Stand Up for America Day Parade and Festival with marching bands, floats, food, and fireworks on April 26.  Savannah Morning News
  • The 47th Annual Savannah Scottish Games will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 8:45 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Bynuh’s Field, Bethesda Academy on 9570 Ferguson Ave—visitors will enjoy Celtic competitions, authentic Scottish food and live music including headliner Ally the Piper.  Savannah Business Journal
