CRIME NEWS

  • Savannah Police (SPD) arrested 23-year-old Donnell Smith after officers responded at 2:30 a.m. to a shooting on the 5500 block of Abercorn Street that injured a woman with serious gunshot wounds in a parking lot and a man inside a business, and he now faces charges of 3 counts of aggravated assault, 3 counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, simple battery and stalking.  WSAV
  • Tybee Island officers responded around 8 p.m. to a shooting on the 1000 block of Lovell Avenue where one victim was en route to the hospital and the suspect was in custody—officials said the case is not linked to Orange Crush.  Savannah Morning News
  • Early Saturday morning at 2 a.m., Savannah police responded to a shooting at the Extended Stay America hotel on Abercorn Street—a man and a woman were hurt and taken to the hospital, and investigators have not confirmed a suspect.  WJCL
  • Savannah police are searching for a suspect in a hit-and-run that killed local bicyclist Larry Haywood—known as Flag Man—near Skidaway Road and East 49th Street.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Saturday, April 19, partiers enjoyed live music and aerial views at Orange Crush on Tybee Island as helicopters flew overhead and a cargo ship passed near the shore. Chaos erupted when someone shouted that a gun had been seen, and police with Georgia DNR officers worked to disperse the crowd — volunteers later cleaned the beach amid traffic gridlock.  Savannah Morning News

  • Savannah's Mayor Van Johnson was sworn in as president of the African American Mayors Association on Friday at the group's annual conference in Washington DC. He will serve a one year term & work on strengthening public safety and supporting minority owned businesses.  WJCL
