COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Officials announced road closures (6 p.m. Friday to 4 a.m. Saturday and 6 p.m. Saturday to 4 a.m. Sunday) and more police presence as Tybee Island hosts the Crush Reloaded festival this weekend with expected downtown traffic from beach-bound visitors.  Savannah Morning News
  • Students and staff from Savannah State University volunteered with Habitat for Humanity on Wednesday, April 16 to build a three-bedroom home for a local single mother, marking a renewed effort in campus and community service partnerships for affordable housing.  Savannah Morning News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Apr. 16, two boys (16 and 9) were rescued from a strong rip current at Tybee Island's north jetty when emergency crews including Captain Tadd Rubin and Beach Manager Jen Wittendorf helped them reach shore, with all suffering only minor cuts.  WJCL

  • Retail beauty brand Sephora and jewelry store Swarovski will open at Tanger Outlets Savannah this spring. Sephora will operate in a 5,900 sqft space near J. Crew Factory while Swarovski will set up in a 900 sqft area next to Puma.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Catrett Casting is seeking local talent to appear in a bar scene for The Comeback King by Judd Apatow and Glen Powell. Casting calls welcome patrons (aged 25 to 60) of all ethnicities, and filming is scheduled in Savannah on April 30.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah State University is hosting a weeklong celebration with community events and a pep rally to honor its 15th president, Dr. Jermaine Whirl (a boost to campus spirit). His investiture ceremony takes place today at 10 a.m. at Tiger Arena.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah Scholars invites qualified eighth graders to apply for its program that helps high-achieving students navigate college admissions and affordability. The initiative offers workshops (covering financial literacy, test prep, and college visits) and one-on-one mentoring from local professionals.  WTOC 11
  • Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue announced his retirement from overseeing 25 public colleges on Wednesday, Apr. 16 — ending a 40-year career — and the Board of Regents will soon begin a national search for his successor.  Savannah Morning News

  • Today, Savannah was named one of the nation’s Top 12 Cities to Watch on Environmental Health by the CDHI + African American Mayors Association, highlighting efforts to address extreme heat.
