COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Savannah launched the Community Advancement Leadership Institute in early April to offer residents free and affordable classes in community, nonprofit, career, and youth leadership, with sessions open for registration until Aug. 26 and a second round beginning in September. The program will also feature events—such as Super Saturdays and a neighborhood convention on Dec. 13—and associations completing five core trainings will be eligible for a $1,000 grant.  Savannah Morning News
  • Tremont Temple Missionary Baptist Church will mark its 103rd anniversary beginning Sunday, April 20 with multiple events including a Good Friday performance at 7:00 p.m. featuring Seven Women of God, a midweek service on April 23 with Rev. Antron Piper, Sr., an outreach project on April 26 at 9:00 a.m., and a culminating service on April 27 at 10:00 a.m. with Guest Pastor Rev. Anthony O. Corbett.   • Tybee Island officials held a press conference today to explain plans for Saturday’s Orange Crush event, saying that all main activities will be held on Saturday to limit disruptions. They warned that residents and visitors should expect heavy traffic, limited parking & a strong first responder presence as police set up a checkpoint along Highway 80.  WJCL

  • Lt. Helio Garcia of South Fulton Police was killed in a head-on crash Tuesday night when another driver veered into his lane — Georgia State Patrol is investigating the incident.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Kay Heritage welcomed 10 Savannah Country Day School middle school students outside Big Bon Bodega on Tuesday to learn business basics, bagel making, and the restaurant's use of locally sourced ingredients using a Mini-Mester class. The session provided students hands-on experience with local entrepreneurship.  Savannah Morning News
  • Georgia Southern University and East Georgia State College will consolidate today as the Board of Regents approved the change to address EGSC's declining enrollment and improve academic programs in the region — an implementation team from both schools will form and begin campus listening sessions before a final SACSCOC vote finalizes details more than a year from now.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Georgia State Supreme Court held oral arguments on Sapelo Island zoning cases involving a referendum to repeal an ordinance that allowed larger homes in a community with one of the state's last Gullah Geechee communities. The justices must decide whether to lift the injunction on the ordinance and let the special election move forward, with a ruling expected in the coming months.  WTOC 11

  • The Let’s Get Healthy Health Fair will be held April 26th, 10am till 2pm at St. Philip AME Church — 613 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd in Savannah, co-sponsored by Top Ladies of Distinction, Inc., Top Teens of America, National Coalition of 100 Black Women of Greater Savannah Chapter, Inc., and National Council of Negro Women.
