Good morning, Savannah. Here's your local news at a glance for Tuesday, the 15th of April.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • It has been one week since the bridge painter fell into the Ogeechee River and agencies have searched the water with the Bryan County Sheriff planning to use cadaver canines and block boat traffic between Highway 17 and I-95 starting on Monday to keep the water still—if his team does not find the body soon, they may call off the search this weekend.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • A fugitive who had evaded capture during a multinational, years-long manhunt was captured today in Savannah by law enforcement—officials say his arrest ends a prolonged search.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Orange Crush will run from Friday, April 18 to Sunday, April 20 with its main event on Tybee Island near the beach pier — the festival features live music, DJ's, and a car/bike show with additional events in Hardeeville and Savannah. The event started in 1988 as a Savannah State University student gathering and took its name from the school color and the Crush soft drink brand — though it is not sponsored by that company.  Savannah Morning News

FINANCE NEWS

  • Following FEMA’s disaster declaration after Hurricane Helene last fall, the IRS and Georgia’s Department of Revenue extended the tax filing deadline from today to May 1 for 2024 taxes (taxpayers needing extra time until October 15 must request it).  GPB News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At last week’s summit held at Savannah Technical College’s Eckburg Auditorium, experts reported coastal families can only afford a house priced just under $205,000 while median prices in many parts of the region far exceed this amount—leading to a projected shortage of over 37,000 housing units in the coming years. They urged political and moral courage along with zoning reforms to increase housing density and address the crisis.  Savannah Morning News
