COMMUNITY NEWS

  • George Herbert (Herbie) Griffin, a Benedictine Military School alum and veteran of World War II and the Korean War, passed away Wednesday at age 103. He was a longtime coach at St. Vincent's Academy and an active civic leader in Savannah.  WJCL

CRIME NEWS

  • On April 2, the Savannah Police sought help locating 33-year-old James Deandertrai Green (wanted in connection with a domestic violence incident near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Broughton Street) and warned the public not to approach him.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah police are looking for 20-year-old Keon Sanders in connection with the fatal April 7 shooting on N. Fernwood Drive that killed 31-year-old Ahkeem Holmes at 3:10 p.m.—authorities warn the armed and dangerous suspect should not be approached and urge anyone with information to contact law enforcement.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah native and Savannah State University graduate Clay Hodges will headline the permitted Orange Crush Festival on April 19 — the one-day event runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and will feature local co-headliners Quanna and Yung Damon alongside other performers.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • U.S. regulators completed a monthslong review of Hyundai's $7.6 billion electric vehicle plant in Georgia and found that the current environmental permit is acceptable. They stated the permit will have a long-term minor effect on the area's drinking water—local and state officials praised the review while a conservation group said they will study the decision further.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fifteen volunteer firefighters in Chatham County resigned on Friday after the county took over operations on July 1, 2024, noting that volunteers had no future with the department. The fire department is expected to comment soon.  WJCL

HEALTH NEWS

  • St. Joseph Candler is constructing a 40,000 square foot health care campus in Bryan County at a cost of ten million dollars. When it opens, it will employ 80 workers—20 of whom are doctors—with nearly five million dollars in payroll and a flexible design to serve urgent, primary and industrial care needs near the Hyundai plant.  WJCL
  • St. Joseph’s/Candler dedicated its new Bryan County campus in Ellabell on April 10th — the campus includes an urgent care center, exam rooms and a lab to serve local residents, and local leaders attended the event.  Savannah Morning News
