COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Two-time Olympian and Georgia 811 spokesperson Cliff Meidl visited Savannah on Thursday to urge homeowners and contractors to call 811 three business days before digging so utility lines for gas, electric & water can be safely located. The free service helps prevent injuries and costly damage.  WJCL

  • Finches Sandwiches and Sundries closed its Thunderbolt shop Thursday after environmental concerns blocked its building loan at Mechanics Avenue (owners Rebecca Gawley and Jamie Pleta have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help secure a new location).  WTOC 11
  • Savannah-based Parker’s Kitchen was named a 2026 USA TODAY Top Workplace for the second time as it marks its 50th anniversary and plans to open 17 new stores later this year + supports its community with a people-first culture.  WTOC 11

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hollywood star Glen Powell is filming his new movie Comeback King in Thunderbolt—tied to producer Judd Apatow—with extras being sought for roles across the region including Savannah.  WJCL
  • Savannah Arts Academy will present '6 Degrees of Separation' at Tybee Post Theater (a local venue known for embracing culture) in an event designed to highlight artistic talent in the community.  WTOC 11
  • Georgia and South Carolina will host events for America's 250th anniversary with historical reenactments, lectures and fireworks. Locals in Savannah will be able to attend a free lecture at the Savannah History Museum on Tuesday, April 21 and join the wreath laying ceremony at Colonial Cemetery on July 4.  Savannah Morning News

  • A Georgia Tech study finds that shipping companies save over $1,000 per container by using Savannah’s port for reliable delivery to markets such as Atlanta, Memphis and Nashville — short overland routes and direct rail access boost savings.  WTOC 11

  • Savannah State University will invest Dr. Jermaine Whirl as its 15th president on April 17 at 10 a.m. in Tiger Arena — the public ceremony will formalize his role while he outlines plans for campus growth and new academic programs.  WTOC 11

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Asian needle ants have been spotted in Georgia forests and urban yards, and experts warn the invasive insects can cause severe allergic reactions with their painful stings. Residents are advised to inspect mulch, logs, and landscaping areas to avoid coming in contact with the pests.  Savannah Morning News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new study released Thursday by the Parkland Center for Clinical Innovation found that 663,000 rural Georgians face layered health care challenges from high chronic disease rates, hospital closures, and limited telehealth (especially in coastal counties). Researchers say easing state policy restrictions on nurse practitioners could immediately improve care.  WJCL

  • Runners join the Publix Savannah Women’s Half Marathon and 5K tomorrow with packet pick-up at Forsyth Park at 6:00 a.m. and races beginning at 7:00 a.m. and 7:15 a.m.; a Women’s Wellness Seminar Series and Race Expo are held today at Kehoe Iron Works + residents should plan ahead.  WJCL
