CULTURE NEWS

  • Disney On Ice is hosting Mickey’s Search Party at Enmarket Arena in Savannah with five performances scheduled, including two today. The event features ice skating, acrobatic stunts and beloved characters from popular Disney films.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah-based author Jessie Fream released her debut book, Humans of Savannah: A Collection of Interviews with Locals, which gathers heartfelt stories from community members. She has engaged with residents since 2020 and discussed her work with WJCL 22 News.  WJCL
  • City officials in Tybee Island announced tighter controls for this year’s beach music festival rebranded as 'Krush Reloaded', set for April 18. The one-day event will have one stage, no vendor activity, and parking restrictions to ensure a safer weekend.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Savannah State University’s Upward Bound program will celebrate its 60th anniversary with a reunion gala on Saturday, May 2 at 6 p.m. in King Frazier’s Savannah Ballroom, according to program director Bobby Roberts. The gala will honor six decades of academic support for high schoolers from low-income and first-generation households.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A group of biologists, neighbors and volunteers gathered on Tybee Island Friday to rescue five box turtles from North Beach near Polk Street. The turtles are moved to Oatland Island Wildlife Center until Eco Park construction begins Monday — a project aimed at protecting local habitats.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia lawmakers approved a bill that allows pharmacies to provide birth control without a prescription and ease access for women in areas with few OB-GYNs — the measure now moves to Gov. Brian Kemp and lets pharmacists dispense a three-month supply first and up to 12 months later.  The Current
  • Historic Savannah Foundation is hosting a panel on new design possibilities for the historic district on April 16 at the preservation center, while the city develops its first multi-modal transportation plan in phases, including a shared-use path along River Street.  Savannah Morning News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sen. Raphael Warnock supports a bipartisan bill that would cap out-of-pocket insulin costs at $35; if passed, the law will help over 1 million Georgians with diabetes starting in 2027. Advocates say the measure could ease costs for both insured and uninsured individuals.  WTOC 11
  • Six restaurants in Bryan and Effingham Counties earned scores of 90 or higher during inspections in March and early April; One Taste + Charlie Grainger’s received perfect scores as part of reviews by the Georgia Department of Public Health to ensure safe dining.  Savannah Morning News
