- ➤ The Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Observance Day Association will hold its Annual Interfaith Service on Sunday, April 12 at 4:00 p.m. at First Nazareth Missionary Baptist Church in Savannah+ local youth will read Dr. King’s speeches and ministers are invited for the memorial march of the clergy. - ➤ Dr. Quianna Lavant is set to be the keynote speaker at Savannah State University's 2026 Honors Convocation on April 9 at 9:30 a.m. inside Tiger Arena as part of a celebration honoring more than 1,800 students and faculty. WTOC 11
- ➤ Greenbriar Children’s Center is renewing its mission by partnering with the Chatham County Commission (support from the County Blueprint Grant) to renovate Wilson II and build a new childcare center on Savannah’s west side. - ➤ Georgia lawmakers passed a literacy bill that places a literacy coach in every kindergarten to third grade school—tackling low reading scores. The measure awaits the governor’s signature today and schools will soon begin hiring over 1,300 coaches. The Current

- ➤ Savannah State University named Torrance Garvin as its new Chief of Police effective April 1 (after a 34-year career with the Savannah Police Department) and he now leads campus security, succeeding Interim Chief Sydney Thomas. The Savannah Tribune
- ➤ Residents can get free tax help from the Neighborhood Improvement Association through the VITA program at their Savannah location (7010 Skidaway Road, Unit 9) until the April 15 deadline. WTOC 11
- ➤ Georgia Social Security beneficiaries received SSI checks on April 1 & those starting before May 1997 were paid on April 3. Retirement benefits will be distributed on birth dates: April 8 for 1-10, April 15 for 11-20, and April 22 for 21-31, the administration announced to help plan budgets. Savannah Morning News
- ➤ Community members and local leaders gathered in Savannah last week to kick off attorney Stephanie Burgess’s campaign for Georgia House District 164.
