- ➤ Nearly 600 people raced in the Get Your Rear in Gear 5k—hosted by St. Joseph’s/Candler—in Savannah Saturday morning to raise awareness of colon cancer and to fund early detection and treatment programs. The funds will directly help patients seeking screenings and treatments while also honoring the memory of longtime reporter Mike Manhattan. WTOC 11
- ➤ On Saturday, The Hub held outdoor cycling classes where participants paid $25 to support Mary’s Place Sexual Assault Center—an organization that offers 24-hour crisis help, counseling, and SANE exams. The funds raised during sexual assault awareness month will aid in providing services that grants do not cover. WTOC 11
- ➤ Savannah Aviation hosted its second annual ‘Thrill of the First Flight’ event Saturday — letting children use flight simulators, talk with vendors and ride planes. Organizers said that 120 to 150 kids participated in the program — exposing them to aviation and new career paths. WTOC 11

- ➤ An innocent Savannah man, Darren Lewis, a retired Gulfstream employee who was struck during a high-speed chase in Liberty City, was laid to rest at Christ Memorial Church on March 19 while Savannah police arrested Kenneth Gordon, 41, on charges including homicide by vehicle in the first degree and hit and run resulting in death, leaving behind his wife, two children and six grandchildren. - ➤ Mayor Van Johnson will honor Savannah native and Super Bowl champion Nolan Smith Jr. on Monday at 2:45 p.m. at Southbridge Savannah Golf Club during his Charity Golf Tournament — the ceremony will recognize Smith Jr.'s NFL win and his community support through the Nolan Smith Foundation. WSAV
- ➤ Savannah City Council approved an ordinance on March 27 to create an Affordable Housing Overlay District that will let property owners build high-density and multi-family housing in areas that have mostly single-family homes. The measure passed by a 7—2 vote and requires that projects be certified as affordable when costs are no more than 30% of a household’s income, with targeted zones to be mapped out in a future meeting.
