ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Savannah Fire crews battled a fire in an enclosed trailer parked near a home Saturday night—extinguishing the blaze quickly—and notified the trailer’s owner.  WTOC 11
  • All lanes on I-16 westbound were closed Saturday night as firefighters battled a car fire (near the 164 exit) and officials are investigating the cause.  WTOC 11

CRIME NEWS

  • Just after 2:30 a.m. Sunday, Effingham County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting near Parker's on Old Augusta Road — a man was fatally shot in the head while another with a gunshot injury was taken to a hospital, and the investigation remains ongoing.  WTOC 11
  • Police responded at 6:10 p.m. Saturday to a commercial establishment on the 2000 block of W. Bay Street in West Savannah where they found a man with a fatal gunshot wound and took him to Memorial Health University Medical Center—no arrests have been made.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • On March 16th, the Jasper Memorial Ceremony honored Revolutionary War hero Sgt. William Jasper indoors at the Knights of Columbus after inclement weather halted the usual outdoor procession. The event, held before today's St. Patrick's Day parade, continues a cherished Savannah tradition.  WTOC 11
  • Residents can watch Savannah's St. Patrick's Day Parade live today on TV and online starting at 10:15 a.m. with coverage on WSAV, WTOC, and WJCL + the parade begins at East Gwinnett and Abercorn then moves through Broughton to finish at Madison Square.  Savannah Morning News
  • The Savannah St. Patrick’s Day parade starts at 10:15 a.m. Monday, March 17th, downtown. Live coverage begins at 4:30 a.m.—with the Running of the Squares at 6 a.m. and a countdown at 10 a.m.—to let residents follow the vibrant event.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Chatham County residents will vote Tuesday, March 18 on a 1% sales tax to raise up to $705 million for school projects like building new schools, renovating older ones, and upgrading technology and safety—early in-person voting ends Friday, March 14 and mail-in voting finished March 7.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Savannah is under a tornado watch until 2 p.m.—the National Weather Service warns that severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and heavy rain may develop while hazards remain from 8 a.m. Sunday through 8 a.m. Monday. Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency and reported power outages near Forsyth Park.  Savannah Morning News

  • Tybee Island City Council postponed a vote on two directives to amend the short-term rental ordinance to allow permits for restored historic properties and tourist-heavy residential zones due to procedural uncertainty—staff will later research recommendations for the changes.  Savannah Morning News
