CRIME NEWS

  • Savannah police said one person was injured in a mid-morning shooting on Friday around 11:45 a.m. in the 10500 block of Abercorn Street (near Magnolia Avenue) while officers blocked off nearby areas and continued their investigation.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tybee Island is hosting its annual Irish Heritage Parade today at 3 p.m. at City Hall as the route runs down Butler Avenue to Fanny's on Tybrisa Street, marking the kickoff for St. Patrick’s Day weekend — extra police will enforce road closures from 2:30 p.m. to ensure safety.   • The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is pushing for expanded subpoena power with House Bill 161 to cover terroristic threats, identity theft, computer crimes, false reports and harassing communications—this effort follows a wide bipartisan House vote and awaits a Senate decision. If approved, the GBI will be able to obtain subscriber information from telecommunications companies without needing court approval in more cases.  Savannah Morning News
  • Savannah city officials have set water-filled plastic barricades along River Street and City Market until Tuesday morning—measures that block vehicles and ensure quick access for first responders. HEALTH NEWS

  • Drug overdose deaths in Chatham County fell to 51 in 2024, though officials found xylazine—a non-opioid tranquilizer—in seven autopsies. CNT Director Michael Sarhatt said the dangerous drug, which is mixed with fentanyl, poses a growing threat—prompting law enforcement and federal agencies to work together for further action.  Savannah Morning News
