COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 7th Annual Gears & Grub Food Truck and Car Show takes place today at Freedom Park in Rincon (featuring food trucks, classic cars, live music and an interactive health fair) to support Effingham Health System Foundation's $5 Million capital campaign.  WJCL
  • Parking for Savannah's St. Patrick's Day parade will be offered Tuesday, March 17 at the Savannah Convention Center from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. for a $25 flat rate while city garages and scheduled shuttle services from Richmond Hill and Tybee Island provide alternative transportation options.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The inaugural Hindsight Film Festival in Savannah showcases historical documentaries at local venues including the cultural arts center, the Civil Rights Museum, a high school, and Savannah State University. The festival runs now through March 8 (15 features, 30 shorts, panel discussions, and history tours).  GPB News
  • On Friday, Forsyth Park hosted the annual Greening of the Fountain event when community leaders (Marty Hogan and Margaret Tootle) poured green dye at noon to signal the start of Savannah’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities. Leopold’s Ice Cream then served a green milkshake at 2 p.m.  WTOC 11

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in our area increased overnight amid rising global tensions & seasonal demand; the Data Team created a map using AAA data that displays county averages in Georgia and South Carolina refreshed each morning.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at STEM Academy at Bartlett Middle School will launch a new E-Racing curriculum next school year where teams of seventh graders, including one all girls team, will build four Formula 24 E-Race cars using science and math skills (from wiring to frame assembly).  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After International Paper reduced water withdrawal by more than 10 million gallons a day, the Floridan aquifer in Savannah rebounded (70-year record) with increases of up to 23 feet in some wells. Officials briefed the Coastal Permitting Advisory Committee at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center on Feb. 27.  GPB News
  • Stan Gray shows iris varieties affected by a cold snap at the University of Georgia Botanical Garden in Georgetown — south of Savannah.  Savannah Morning News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia residents will set their clocks forward tomorrow at 2 a.m. when Daylight Saving Time begins, losing one hour of sleep but gaining later sunsets (electronic devices such as smartphones update automatically while manual clocks may need adjustment) as the state moves to summer time.  Savannah Morning News
