COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A local casino night fundraiser took place on Tuesday, Mar. 3 to support kids in foster care, drawing community donors+ sponsors to aid local programs.  WTOC 11
  • Port Wentworth's new venue, VyStar Pavilion, earned its name from a naming rights deal with VyStar Credit Union announced Tuesday. The open-air amphitheater, located (20 minutes from downtown Savannah), is expected to open in summer 2026 with a concert on Aug.7 plus community-focused initiatives.  WJCL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Two Effingham County schools were honored as 2026 High Flying Schools (a national recognition for academic and whole-child achievement) at the National Youth Advocacy and Resilience Conference in Savannah this week. Effingham County Superintendent Dr. Ford said the honor reflects educators’ hard work in creating supportive learning environments.  WJCL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Over the past four months, the Floridan aquifer in Savannah has risen to record highs — likely because International Paper shut down and cut its water withdrawal by over 10 million gallons per day. FINANCE NEWS

  • This tax season, Savannah residents may see refunds $300 to $1,000 higher than usual because of recent law changes, experts say. They advise splitting extra funds between paying down high-interest credit card debt and boosting emergency savings (Bankrate research supports the recommendation).  WJCL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Heightened security measures are in place for the St. Patrick’s Day parade on Tuesday, Mar. 17 as police, fire, EMS, and state patrol coordinate extra patrols and parking enforcement in downtown Savannah. The plan targets DUIs, traffic violations and disorderly conduct.  Savannah Morning News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Six-ounce bags of Elite Treats Chicken Chips for Dogs, sold in stores across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, have been recalled due to potential Salmonella contamination (expiration dates April 20 through April 27); pet owners should stop using them and email [email protected] for a refund or replacement.  WJCL

  • Local advocates and city leaders want to preserve part of the Weeping Time site (where over 400 enslaved people were sold in 1859) to honor its history. Mayor Van Johnson said the city is in talks with the property owners about keeping part of the industrial listing for public use.  WJCL
