COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Effingham County community members gathered Saturday morning at Old Place Pub in Rincon to surprise group home resident Anselm Green with a refurbished car after he earned his driver’s license. Local businesses and friends donated funds and work, and his new car will help him head to work Monday.  WTOC 11
  • Savannah is planning a major development in the Railroad District with proposals to restore the Georgia Railroad Museum’s roundhouse and add housing plus retail spaces. The project—developed with Coastal Heritage Society input—will boost cultural and tourism appeal across the community.  Savannah Morning News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah's annual St. Patrick's Day golf tournament took place yesterday *at Bacon Park Golf Course* at 8 a.m. to raise funds for the parade committee, with tournament chair Jack Holland noting the event lifts community spirit as locals count down to the holiday.  WJCL
  • Descendants and locals gathered Saturday at the historical marker (site of Georgia’s largest 1859 slave auction) to honor the Weeping Time; the ceremony featured libation rites and personal tributes to remember those affected by the event.  Savannah Morning News
  • A small group met today in a fenced park off Augusta Avenue to honor 429 enslaved individuals sold at Ten Broeck Race Course by reciting names and pouring water from a plastic bottle (each chair at Otis Brock Elementary symbolizes a child from that day) to keep their memory alive.  Savannah Morning News
  • A commemorative event titled 'We remember the 429 souls' recalls how 429 enslaved people from Butler Plantation were sold at a slave auction in Savannah on Mar. 2-3, 1859 — organizers aim to keep the history visible for the community.  Savannah Morning News
  • Gray's Reef Ocean Discovery Center in downtown Savannah reopened on Feb. 28 after a $1 million renovation and a block party at 340 MLK Blvd., showcasing new replica reefs, sandboxes, and interactive exhibits — a collaboration by the Gray's Reef National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and NOAA that aims to boost marine awareness.  Savannah Morning News

  • Georgia’s timber industry has struggled since International Paper closed mills last fall, resulting in job losses and lower timber prices. Lawmakers are considering a $14 million timber innovation plan & House Bill 1000 to boost the industry while a Forestry Solutions Summit in Midway spurred discussions for long-term change.  The Current

  • A severe drought (due to La Niña) has raised wildfire risks across Georgia with over 900 fires in the past 30 days; southeast incidents have burned thousands of acres near our area.   • Mayor Van Johnson ordered flags to fly at half-staff (March 1 to March 7) to honor civil rights pioneer Rev. Jesse Jackson, who died Feb. 17 at age 84. The proclamation highlights his work in promoting equality and economic empowerment.  Savannah Morning News
