COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Senior Citizens Inc. will host its 2026 Legends, Leaders, and Life Well Lived Awards Luncheon on May 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at The Palmetto Club at The Landings (honoring Pat Hackney, Shirley Barber James, and Dr. Paul Pressly for community service).  The Savannah Tribune
  • Miriam Kantsiper Center, a respected activist and trailblazer — remembered for mentoring generations — passed Feb. 17; services were held Feb. 19 at Bonaventure to honor her lasting legacy in the community.  The Savannah Tribune
  • The Housing Authority of Savannah is hosting a Black History Month Program today at 5:30 p.m. at Building B, 1407 Wheaton St. The free event will feature 21 youth and eight seniors who share stories to honor local pioneers and celebrate legacy.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • The renovated Carnegie Library Heritage Center at 537 East Henry Street held a ribbon-cutting event last Friday, Feb. 20 — a Savannah State University concert and libation ceremony marked its reopening as a special collections library celebrating African American heritage.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Cirque de Paris will perform a 90-minute circus show at Savannah Tanger Outlets from March 19-29. The show features top European artists including the Supka Family juggling act, two circus clowns, and producer Anouchka Bouglione's children making their season debut.  The Savannah Tribune
  • Today, the free Modern Band Bash takes place at 6:00 p.m. at Plant Riverside District Live Stage (a scenic venue), featuring SCCPSS and Georgia Southern performers from 2nd graders to teacher bands and celebrating nearly a decade of music innovation through Fred and Dinah Gretsch’s support.  The Savannah Tribune
  • A casting company seeks new faces for the Paramount+ series Tulsa King shoot in Savannah; fittings are set for March 3 or March 4 and filming will occur on March 5, with local hires paid $42 for fittings and $168 for filming, and no transportation or accommodations provided.  WJCL
  • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 2026 nominees include Savannah native Big Boi, a member of Outkast who attended Jenkins High School, with induction details set to be revealed in April. Other nominees with Georgia ties are Method Man from Atlanta and the Black Crowes, formed in Marietta (among 17 performers).  WJCL
  • The first Hindsight Film Festival runs in Savannah March 4–8, featuring 15 films, 30 shorts, discussions, history tours and awards lunch. It opens with a free screening at the National Museum of the Mighty 8th Air Force on March 4 at 11 a.m. and virtual programming runs March 8–15.  The Savannah Tribune

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Georgia lawmakers passed bills yesterday that will bring literacy coaches to elementary schools, a cell phone ban to high schools starting fall 2027, and weapons detection systems to public schools. They also approved measures to lower college costs and address teacher shortages.  Savannah Morning News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Chatham County removed a historic 300-year-old oak tree after determining it posed a safety risk + they said assessments of other aging trees are underway.  WTOC 11

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia hosted the Original 33 Memorial Day on Wednesday at the Capitol, featuring a pictorial exhibit and tribute program honoring the first Black lawmakers elected in 1868 (six of whom had ties to Savannah) while state Rep. Carl Gilliard highlighted plans for a permanent monument and school lessons.  WJCL
  • Savannah homeowners may qualify for up to $2,000 in repair grants or a $15,000 home improvement loan if they meet income, ownership, and property requirements; funding is limited and provided on a first-come, first-served basis (eligibility is confirmed by the City Housing Services Department).  WTOC 11
