COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Tybee Island Fire Rescue rescued a cat stuck in a palm tree on 14th Street Wednesday afternoon. Crews arrived at 4:45 p.m.—after the cat had been climbing since 8:00 a.m.—and safely brought it to the ground.  WTOC 11
  • Detraya Gilliard placed a billboard tribute near Hyundai AutoNation on Abercorn Street to honor her daughter, Desaray, who would have turned 19 on Feb. 15. She refreshed the memorial at Yamacraw Village and has asked city officials to preserve the site to keep Desaray’s memory alive.  WTOC 11
  • Randy Davis Sr., the founder of Davis Produce in Wilmington Island, died today at his home, leaving behind his wife, son, and grandson + a lasting legacy of generosity in the community.  WTOC 11
  • Forsyth Farmers’ Market and FARM Hospitality Group have named the restaurants and chefs for the second annual Chefs + Farmers: A Culinary Experience event—supporting local farmers. The event will be held March 5 at 7 p.m. at Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum on Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd.  Savannah Business Journal

  • A fatal crash in Chatham County claimed the life of beloved teacher Dr. Linda Davis + local leaders expressed sorrow while officials continue investigating the incident.  WJCL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Savannah student Vandan Patel, accepted into Mensa at age seven, is now competing in America's Most Artistic Kid contest by sharing his imaginative 3D creations and drawings to benefit Blood Cancer United. Public voting for the top 20 round runs through Feb. 26 (with a $20,000 grand prize).  WJCL
  • Joe Randall (beloved chef and longtime friend of WTOC) was honored in a local tribute today, and his culinary influence continues to inspire Savannah. Family and friends celebrated his legacy while recalling his warm spirit.  WTOC 11

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers are set to pass House Bill 1193 to boost early reading skills — the plan includes funding literacy coaches to help teachers in elementary schools. The bill passed the House Education Committee last week and now moves through the House and Senate before changes take effect.  The Current

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Construction work on I-16 to widen the highway and improve the I-16/I-95 interchange is causing lane closures and detours in Chatham County from Feb. 15 to Feb. 21. Motorists should expect intermittent daytime and nighttime closures and follow GDOT detour instructions.  Savannah Morning News
